Prayers and Poinsettias annual update!

Prayers and Poinsettias would like to thank all of its contributors, for making it possible to provide funds to students in need.  The Food and Arts Festival was a great success. The local artists, restaurants, and residents once again donated their talents to support student scholarships.  The families of Prayers and Poinsettias are honored to be surrounded   by such generous supporters.  We are planning big changes for next year’s festival, including moving the event to the fall of 2014.  Further information will be available after the first of the year.

Prayers and Poinsettia’s would also like to announce that their founder, Mary Lynn Beatty has been chosen to serve on the Montgomery County Community Colleges Alumni Board.  Mary Lynn states, “This is a wonderful opportunity to become more involved with the college that has been so supportive of the scholarship work Prayers and Poinsettias has being doing.”  She is honored to have been granted this position.

She is currently majoring in Early Childhood Education.   Elizabeth states “My Mother’s death has allowed me to grow as a person and to think positively about any situation.  I want to do all that I can to help others who are also affected by breast cancer and now regularly volunteer and fundraise in my Mother’s memory.”

The following recipient’s Scholarships have been renewed for the 2013-2014 school term.

We're Back!

I know it is hard to believe, but yes, it is that time of year again.

I am happy to report that Prayers and Poinsettias had another great year. We sold 500 poinsettias last Christmas. Our festival was also a great success. If you weren’t able to make the event this past year, please put it on your calendar for next year!  “Prayers and Poinsettias Food and Art Festival” will be held Sunday, July 28th, 2012 at the Montgomery County Community Colleges , North Hall Art Gallery in Pottstown. Both of these events enabled us to add to our scholarship fund.

We were also granted a change in status by the government. We are now able to provide scholarships to any student whose mother has suffered with breast cancer. Prior to this change we could only provide for students whose mothers had terminal breast cancer. This has enabled us to assist even more students with their education. Thank You to all for your continued support as none of this would be possible without you.

We have added a new plant again this year, called SPLASH. To view the available plants this year simply click on the products tab. All poinsettias are $20 a piece and the Deadline for ordering is Friday November 16th. Most deliveries are made the week after Thanksgiving.   If your delivery location is not on the form, and we have delivered to you in the past, please mark off “other” as your location. Prayers and Poinsettias Annual Newsletter

I would like to start off by thanking all of you who have supported us this year!

Prayers and Poinsettias has had an amazing year and we are looking forward to 2012! In 2011 we hosted our very first food and art festival with Montgomery County Community College that raised over $3000.00 which allowed us to establish a scholarship fund with the MCCC foundation. We also had a phenomenal increase in our Poinsettia sales this year – from 270 last season to 416 this year!!

Another accomplishment this past year was petitioning the IRS for a change in our 501 (c) (3) status. We now are able to broaden our scope of scholarship recipients to all children whose mothers suffer with breast cancer vs. suffering from terminal breast cancer which means we can help out a larger range of children!! Along with establishing the trust fund with MCCC, Prayers and Poinsettias is looking forward to awarding our first scholarship to as senior graduating from Boyertown Area High School this Spring!

As I stated above we are looking forward to what 2012 has to bring!! One of the main things is our 2nd Annual Prayers and Poinsettias Food and Art Festival which will be held on Sunday, August 5th, 2012! Please do yourself a favor and save the date!! It will be held at Montgomery County Community Colleges' West Campus in the North Hall Art Gallery which the college has offered us again as our venue!! So far we have several new restaurants joining the program this year as well as many new artists which mean a bigger and better festival this year! So again… mark your calendar and look forward to a great time!

As always, I would like to thank all of those who so faithfully support Prayers and Poinsettias – we couldn't do it without you!!

Barto Woman lets hope bloom through a tradegy by Kate Wilcox | Reading Eagle

Three years ago, Barto resident Mary Beatty started a scholarship to fulfill her friend's final wish. Mary's friend, Andrea Smith Collins of Philadelphia, had breast cancer, and her thoughts were with the six children she would leave behind. "Her concern was, the mother passes away ad the father is grieving and then college is dropped," Beatty Explained. To aid Collin's children and other kids whose mothers have stage 4 breast cancer, Beatty set up Prayers and Poinsettias, a nonprofit scholarship foundation based in Barto.

Collins, 37, died in 2008, and last year Prayers and Poinsettias gave out its first scholarships: $500 to a freshman at Montgomer County Community College. Beatty is a graduate of that school. This year, the nonprofit is setting up a scholarship at Boyertown High School. "It's really a wonderful cause," Beatty said. "The problem we're having is actually finding children to give the scholarship to."

The first year, the nonprofit sold 275 poinsettias at $20 apiece. "This years we're ramping it up," Beatty said. A May fundraiser in Pottstown called Taste of the TOwn, which included a silent auction and food tasting, raised $3,000 for the foudation. Future scholarship amounts will depend on how much money Prayers and Poinsettias can raise in a particular year."We would like to be able to pay a (student's) full tuition throughout communuty colleg,"Beatty said.
