Scholarship awardee for 2013-2014

The families of Prayers and Poinsettias are honored to welcome a new scholarship awardee.

Mallory Durrick was delighted to be awarded a scholarship. She is a current student at Montgomery County Community College’s School of the Culinary Arts. She states “I continue to volunteer for events and have met incredible people along the way.  I’m proud of my  3.87 grade point average and take nothing for granted at this stage in my life. Your generosity will never be forgotten and it’s my hope that one day I can do the same for another student. You’ve made a great difference in my life and I will remain forever grateful. “

The following recipient’s Scholarships have been renewed for the 2013-2014 school term.

Aidan Collins was awarded a five hundred dollar scholarship. He is the son of Andrea , the mother whose concern for children’s education inspired the founding of Prayers and Poinsettias.  Aidan is currently attending Virginia Commonwealth University, with a major in Computer Science. With his education he plans to contribute to the development of software and applications that help those in adverse financial and life circumstances; software that may promote life and goal planning, financial or otherwise.  Aidan will be graduating at the end of this semester. Congratulations Aidan, we are proud of you. It was our honor to assist you. Your mother is smiling upon you! God Bless you always.

Gina DeVon Hunte was awarded a thousand dollar scholarship.  Gina is currently attending Montgomery County Community College, with a major in Human Services. She would like to someday be a case manager/advocate for the “intellectually disabled”. In her thank you letter she wrote “I know this is not a very high paying position, but it gives me great joy to know that I can make a difference in their lives.”

TIPS ON CARING FOR YOUR POINSETTIA!

TAKING YOUR PLANT HOME:
Our plants are delivered to our drop sites directly from the wholesale grower. Never expose the plant to cold temperature for more than a few minutes; a chilled or frozen plant will drop leaves very quickly. When you have the plant at home, remove the protective wrapping immediately.

TAKING CARE OF YOUR POINSETTIA:
With proper care, your poinsettia will last through the holiday season and right into late winter. Play close attention to the following tips:
•Place in a room where there is bright natural light but not where the sun will shine directly on the plant.
•Keep the plant away from locations where it will receive hot or cold draughts.
•Place the plant high enough to be out of reach of nonmetered children and pets.
•Set the plant in a water-proof container to protect your furniture.
•Water the plant thoroughly when the soil surface is dry to the touch. Discard any excess water which remains in the saucer after 10 minutes.
•The bright color of the bracts will remain longer if temperatures do not exceed 22°C.

REFLOWERING YOUR POINSETTIA:
If you cannot bear to throw your poinsettia out when it is finished providing color, you may want to try your hand at reflowering your poinsettia next year.

December Full bloom. Water as needed.
April Color fades.
Keep near sunny window and fertilize when new growth appears.
Cut back stems to about 20 cm.
June 1 Repot if necessary.
Fertilize with a balanced formula 20-20-20.
Continue to water when dry to touch.
Move outside if temperatures do not fall below 10°C.
Place in light shade.
Late August Take inside.
Cut stems back, leaving three or four leaves per shoot.
Sunny window.
Water and fertilize as needed.
Sept. 20 'til December 1 Keep in light only from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Put in dark (NO LIGHTS) 5 p.m. to 8 a.m.

REMEMBER THE KEY TO SUCCESS:
Follow the strict light/dark instructions carefully.

Prayers and Poinsettias annual update!

Prayers and Poinsettias would like to thank all of its contributors, for making it possible to provide funds to students in need.  The Food and Arts Festival was a great success. The local artists, restaurants, and residents once again donated their talents to support student scholarships.  The families of Prayers and Poinsettias are honored to be surrounded   by such generous supporters.  We are planning big changes for next year’s festival, including moving the event to the fall of 2014.  Further information will be available after the first of the year.

Prayers and Poinsettia’s would also like to announce that their founder, Mary Lynn Beatty has been chosen to serve on the Montgomery County Community Colleges Alumni Board.  Mary Lynn states, “This is a wonderful opportunity to become more involved with the college that has been so supportive of the scholarship work Prayers and Poinsettias has being doing.”  She is honored to have been granted this position.
